More than 100 participants join the 40th Archaeology Training Program Field School co sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society and Kansas Anthropological Association west of Hays. The project runs seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 20 with evening programs. The 16 day dig site on land owned by Kenneth Kraus opened Friday as crews prepared for exploration.
Firefighters battled a structure fire at 1312 West 46th in northwest Hays on Friday. Police arrived to heavy flames, with backup from Ellis County Rural Fire Department. Homeowner Daniel Irwin and his wife Amber planned to move in next weekend with their 1-month-old child, calling it a nightmare but relieved it spared them further harm. Irwin works at Farm Bureau Financial Services and notes his insurance background but says such events remain shocking.
A single tornado moved through Logan County late Friday, near Winona and Page City, with initial rope form then a cone as it touched down briefly and moved south of US Highway 40. No injuries reported and only shed damage noted, likely wind related at Page City.
