Mrs. Anna Jane Baird of the Kansas Wheat Commission spoke in Hays on wheat’s role in school lunches and nutrition programs. She promotes recipe development and uses Wheathearts groups to aid wives of growers in menu planning. A booklet with award winning recipes is available by writing to 1021 N Main Hutchinson. One recipe features walnuts, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, egg, milk, and oil baked in a leaf pan.
A Kansas Wheat Commission meeting in Hays featured keynote talks by Dr. Floyd Smith of Kansas State University and Bill Duitsman of the Fort Hays Experiment Station. The event covered wheat production challenges, marketing, consumption avenues, and future research goals, with 54 attendees including commissioners, spouses, and guests.
The Agriculture Department reports a small rise in the hired farm work force in 1971, with about 2.6 million people in the nonmigrant group, while migrant workers fell 12 percent to 179,000. The typical worker was 22, male, white and earned $822 for 76 days of farm labor. Mink pelt production also slid in 1971 to nearly 3.4 million pelts, a 24 percent drop, led by Wisconsin and Minnesota with 63 percent of total output.
Garden City resident Jeannie M McAlister, 33, was injured in an unusual Main Street collision with a bicycle driven by 14-year-old Ron G Tangeman, 213 E 32nd, after he entered the intersection as the light changed. Police said the injuries were believed minor.
The long demanded nomination of Richard G. Kleindienst to be attorney general will be voted on by the Senate Thursday afternoon. Senate leaders from both parties forecast his confirmation. Liberal Democrats opposing the measure are not contesting the outcome.
Rural Housing loans may now count half of the wife’s income toward family income, easing qualification for many families. Joseph B. Turney, County Supervisor, says the change could aid about half of rural applicants by allowing loans for households in towns of 10 000 or fewer. Interest rates vary 7 1 4 to 1 percent with terms up to 33 years. Families with adequate commercial credit remain ineligible.
Lt Gov Reynolds Shultz, seeking the Republican nomination for governor, pledged in Ness City that if elected he would reserve days each month to meet with any resident about government problems. He said no appointments would be needed and people could simply come to the governor's office to discuss issues.
Susan Scott of Hays has been named Ellis County Chairman for the Mike Manning for Secretary of State campaign. A Fort Hays State College senior and KU and KSTC attendee, she is the youngest Kansas woman delegate at the National Democratic Convention in Miami Beach.
