Peterson defense says fetus was born alive
In Redwood City California AP report Scott Peterson's defense opened by claiming the fetus was born alive, arguing the baby Conner survived and that Laci Peterson was alive on December 24. Attourney Geragos said experts would prove the umbilical cord was cut to extract a living child. Prosecutors contend the fetus was expelled after Laci's body was dumped, and the trial could carry the death penalty or life without parole.

POW remains returned to U S soil from Vietnam and Korea
Air Force Maj. Gen. Edward Mechenbier piloted the C-141 that carried 21 sets of remains to Hawaii for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command. The remains include soldiers from 1968 Vietnam losses and 1950 Korea battles. Mechenbier, a former Hanoi Hilton prisoner, retires at month’s end after his final flight.

Hundreds of thousands lost power across Texas and Oklahoma after severe storms with hail up to tennis ball size and 80 mph winds. About 300,000 Dallas area customers were without power, TXU Electric Delivery estimates say restoration by Friday noon. Tulsa and Oklahoma City also faced outages and damage with two deaths in Texas and one in Oklahoma. Weather damaged airport facilities and derailed grain cars, but no injuries were reported.
