Northwest Kansas 20-county unemployment rose to 3.28 percent in November from 3.1 percent in October as the state average fell to 5.4 percent. Sheridan led with 2.3 percent unemployment. Ellis, Gove, Graham, Ness, Rawlins also reported sub 3 percent rates. About 2,000 jobseekers were active in the region, with roughly 63,000 in the civilian labor force statewide.
A major employer shut down its inbound call center in Hays affecting about 280 workers. Fewer than 200 chose to leave by March 31, with some moving to work from home or receiving severance. Officials say unemployment remained low at 3.2 to 3.9 percent through mid 2012 as new firms eyed the 42,000 square foot facility on Commerce Parkway.
