Assessor Allen Letter Sparks West Virginia Party Debate
The Grafton Eagle reports a heated open letter about Assessor Allen and his assessment policy amid Republican and Democratic party tensions in Taylor County. A satire on Joseph and Governor Jackson’s orders prompts questions about legality, loyalty, and political influence within state politics. The piece contrasts a vigorous Republican convention with a worn Democratic gathering, urging youth to join the party of progress.

Reforming delegate rules in politics and 1880 lessons
A historical critique argues against strict delegate instructions in conventions, calling the unit rule foolish and a sign of boss and machine politics. It cites Blaine era contrasts, West Virginia conventions, and calls for a united anti-Democratic front to win elections. Includes local party notes from Barbour County and reflections on President Arthur’s effort to harmonize factions.
