Spilger Family Clean Up Nokomis Beach to Honor Mothers

Vivian and George Spilger and their children spent a day collecting 60 bags of trash at Nokomis Beach to make the area pleasant for Mother's Day visitors. They hauled waste to the dump with Linda Johnston's help and plan weekly pickups after county ownership transfer on June 15 to keep the site clean.

City Council to hear R O pipeline repair costs

The council will review estimates to repair the reverse osmosis water main and assess plant problems at the regular meeting. City Engineer Yeatts will present cost estimates and a Reynolds Smith and Hills report on plant conditions, with a public hearing on Esplanade sewer assessments and a hospital request to close Rialto north section for construction materials.

Hydrologist urges water conservation countywide

U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist Horace Sutcliffe Jr. says Sarasota County must conserve water even with ample supply. He urges lawn irrigation at about half an inch weekly, watering in the evening, washing cars on lawns, and limited use during dry spells. A prior sprinkling ban was lifted after rains, and residents are urged to value water and avoid future deficits.

U S 41 skid tests show resurfaced stretch within federal standards

FDOT skid testing on the repaved U S 41 section from Stickney Point Road to the Venice Bypass showed a skid factor of 37, meeting federal safety requirements. The open graded surface improves water drainage and tire grip, with further resurfacing planned toward Shamrock Boulevard this summer by Earl Collins Paving of Sarasota.
