Venice firing ruling clears city in union activity case

State hearing officer James Bradwell ruled the city did not commit unfair labor practices in firing Josephine Bonetti from the comptroller's office. He found Bonetti was let go for seniority and typing shortcomings amid a personnel reduction, not union activity, and that officials had no knowledge of her AFSCME involvement.

Opposition mounts to Caspersen Beach sale to state

The Venice Gardens Home Owners Association voted to oppose transferring Caspersen Beach to the state. The 800-member group will ask County Commission chair William Muirhead to keep the 113-acre parcel in county hands and natural. A Gondolier survey shows 1,123 of 1,147 respondents favor county retention to prevent development. No action is planned for months as state consideration continues.

Venice budget panel selects three residents to oversee next year

A panel of three Venice residents will monitor preparations and the budget process for the coming year to provide an unbiased view. City Administrator Dale Rieth announced the selection after approval for the idea. The panelists are Ellis Perrigo, former Maryland budget director, Paul Atrochin, ex Army officer involved in budgets, and Wayne.

Sailing couple leaves land life for 29 foot sloop AHAB

Al and Betty Huber, in their sixties, sold their Bloomington home and furnishings and embarked on a sea life. They have sailed over 1500 miles since last August and docked in Venice to visit their son John. Their first voyage through Plum Gut near Groton proved harrowing but did not deter them.

Charter draft to be in Plus Charter insert for Venice

The Gondolier Plus will publish a special charter insert in the March 9 issue. The draft aims to inform voters before the referendum planned for April. Public hearings will follow later this month to gather resident comments on the proposal replacing the 51 year old charter.
