Venice Hospital closed a 38 bed wing on May 15 due to a critical nursing shortage and reduced elective surgeries. The hospital plans a third floor addition adding 90 beds but seeks to recruit nurses from the Midwest and Northeast to restore full services.
Sarasota County officials and the four municipalities debated hiring an impartial accounting firm to study dual taxation. Venice and North Port oppose the proposal, sticking with existing reports. Officials suggested revisiting Peat, Marwick & Mitchell while avoiding new audits to speed resolution.
The Venice area unveils its first low energy home in Jacaranda West with 78 square feet of solar panels. Built by the Contractor's Association of Sarasota and Manatee Counties, the house features natural ventilation, thermo pane windows, extra insulation, and energy saving appliances. The ribbon cutting drew Venice Mayor Harry Case and other officials. The home will be open 60 to 90 days before sale at an estimated price of 58 500 on 996 North Gondola Drive.
Venice joins nationwide tribute as bells ring at 2 p.m. EDST to mark 200 years since the Liberty Bell proclaimed independence. The Liberty Bell will be amplified at Independence National Park with a two minute bell-ringing ceremony broadcast by radio and TV nationwide.
Gordon Struble, owner of Venetian Transit, says he will cease operation at 5 p.m. June 11 unless a city deal is reached. City Council had planned a meeting with Mayor Harry Case and Ace Cab Company rep Raymond ge to address the dispute over route deviations and city approval.
