Mrs. Lester Frisby of 732 Serata Street Venice shows a Centennial flag once owned by her grandfather Jeremiah Plumby. The banner bears 1776-1876 and about eighty stars. Jeremiah served in the Civil War, enlisting at age 14 before being sent home.

Army couples deploy amid new joiners in Venice area

Wayne and JoAnn Bell depart for Army service becoming the area’s second couple under a new Army promotion. Wayne heads to Fort Knox Kentucky while JoAnn awaits basic training and both expect a joint Colorado assignment in April. The Bells, Venice High School graduates, are joined by Englewood’s William Forbes and wife Carol awaiting Fort Bragg duty with plans for Chaplain’s assistant training. Army pay starts at 364 dollars monthly for a private.

Red Unit Bicentennial Circus Rehearsals Begin Ahead of Feb Shows

Rehearsals start for the Red Unit of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus as it prepares the Bicentennial Edition for a Feb 9 to 11 run at the Venice arena. Star performers include Gunther Gebel Williams and the Flying Farfans in the two year tour. The Blue Unit already tours 106th Edition with NBC TV special hosted by Johnny Cash airing Feb 18.

Harbor Lights residents in rent dispute with park owner

A Harbor Lights Mobile home residents committee met with attorney John T. Allen after receiving a late evening call from Sy Sherr, attorney for Herbert Hofmann. Sherr urged escrow of proposed rent increases. residents refused without a court order. Hofmann later accepted rent checks with escrow by Jan. 19, per Sherr. A Jan. 29 hearing will decide the lawsuit fate.
