Taxes to rise as city and county budgets grow
The city and county must raise taxes as budgets increase. The 1954 city levy was $1.35 and county rents rise with budgets. Discounts run through October with scales 2 percent in June, 1.2 percent in July, 1 percent in August and September, 1.2 percent in October, and par in November and December. Penalties begin February 1, 1956 for 1955 unpaid taxes. City Clerk Beam notes tax collections lag slightly. through April 0 his office had $564,465.99, 89.14 percent of the levy, versus 89.55 percent a year ago.

Marion Parton 43 of Lewis Street Ranlo died suddenly Sunday night in a local hospital after long illness. Born in Haywood County on March 2, 1912 he lived here 16 years and was a World War I veteran. Survivors include his wife Nora J. Parton his father Charlie Parton of Ranto two brothers Harry Parton of Gastonia R-4 and Robert Parton of Ranto station and a step brother Julius Coleman of Kings Mountain. Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. at McAdenville Wesleyan Methodist Church with burial in Long Creek Memorial Cemetery. Body to be removed from Carothers Funeral Home to Lander Huffsteder McAdenville Monday at 5 30 p.m. and in state at church for one hour before services.

GHS Grads Prepare For Largest Gastonia High Class
The Gastonia High School commencement week features the largest senior class, about 300 graduates. The Tuesday night ceremony begins at 8 o clock with School Board Chairman W R Sparrow presenting diplomas, no speeches due to the hour long process. Principal Frank L Ashley, in office since 1929, will oversee the event.
