Wilbur Peete returns home hungry to a wife Trellis Mae who serves frozen meals and critiques pre frozen, pre heated foods. He laments thawing meat while she defends frozen cooking, and he ends by asking for frozen orange juice and to skip powdered eggs.
The Associated Press reports at least eleven people died in North Carolina over Memorial Day weekend. A truck collision near Sandy Ridge killed Vance Dillon and Moyer Campbell. two others, Leary Nelson and Allen Joyce, were injured. A Barnardsville feud left Oliver Paul Ray dead after a gun and knife fight among kin. multiple relatives jailed. Additional accidents occurred as cars overturned near Madison and Lumberton.
W G McLean won the Gaston County coroner nomination defeating Herbert Francom of Gastonia. He led the county ticket with 10 505 votes, the highest count among all county candidates, in Saturday's primary.
In Crowders Mountain township J R Craig led the 10 man constable field with 351 votes to 335 for G S Guffey, with multiple other candidates including Cone C Carpenter 26 and Jake Black 61. A runoff is possible if Guffey seeks it. Magistrate results show M K Rhyeze 650, J R Mason 556, H H Smith 482, L K Davis 334.
Gaston county voters favored Willis Smith over Frank Graham by 634 votes in Saturdays senatorial primary, with Smith totaling 6,705 to Graham 6,071. Reynolds ran third with 1,273 and Olla Ray Boyd fourth with 187 as 14,138 county voters participated, led by Belmont and Gastonia precincts.
May 29-7 Berlin observers reported a staged confrontation between West and East, with no assault on West sectors and a massive East German turnout. The parade showed readiness to resist Soviet pressure, while East Germany showcased its loyal mobilization in the Communist grip.
Washington on May 29 17 rapid developments intensified the congressional furor over charges that Communists and sympathizers work within the government. Secretary of Commerce Sawyer demanded the resignations of two trade officials accused as security risks Michael F. Lee and William W. Remington who refused to quit under pressure stating they would not quit under fire. Sawyer maintained he questioned neither man’s loyalty.
Gaston County voters nominated an anti Scott delegation to the next state legislature. Charlie Bryant of Gastonia and David P Dellinger of Cherryville won Democratic nominations for the state house, both conservatives who oppose much of the governor's program. State Senator R Grady Rankin of Gastonia also won, reinforcing his strong criticism of tag legislation. Bryant and Dellinger defeated O M Vernon of Mt Holly for the house seats, while Rankin widened his long tenure in the 11th term. Bryant led with 568 votes, Dellinger second.
Vernon Rankin leads with about 8 006 votes to 9 329 for challenger Ken Dellinger as Rankin carries strong support from organization and popularity. Dellinger, a first time candidate from Gastonia, ran on tax and teacher pay scales while Rankin, chairman of the senate finance committee, faced no general election opponent.
In Gastonia and Dallas townships a June 24 runoff is likely after Saturday votes fell short of a majority. W B Garrison led Gastonia with 6 413 votes while Paul Midiver trails and hints at a second primary. Tom Baugh was third and McArver second in the Gastonia tally.
Gastonia attorney Charlie Hamilton trails Woodrow Jones after the first primary with about 4 percent to 44 percent. Hamilton must decide by June 22 whether to pursue a second primary to challenge Jones in the 12th district race.
Four county results show Hamilton sweeping Gaston with 11 146 votes to Jones 1 139, Hamrick 816, Walker 396. Jones dominates western counties Cleveland Rutherford Madison Yancey McDowell Polk, Hamrick and Walker underperform, hampering Hamilton’s bid to split the Jones vote and claim the seat vacated by Rep Bulwinkie.
Raleigh May 29 An NC Senate race between liberal Frank Graham and lawyer Willis Smith looms as primary results show Graham leading but short of a runoff. Unofficial counts from 1924 precincts give Graham 205,345 Smith 245,090 Reynolds 56,018 Boyd 5,665. The winner faces November victory amid evolving views on race and reform.
James Contan Scrures, secretary and measurer at Cook & Company in Memphis, died Saturday afternoon when a small boat capsized in a lake. Funeral for Mr Scruggs was set for Monday. a search continued Sunday for the body of Mr Helms from the accounting department.
Hoyle Efird won the Democratic sheriff renomination with a clear majority in Saturday's primary. Efird led with 1,002 votes, defeating Amott Armstrong who had 2, BAL votes and Gus Ciar thon with 2,831 votes. Efird will face Republican Johnny Russell in November.
