Hal Boyle ponders the ethics and fate of crossing humans with apes. He casts the hypothetical mape as a caution, arguing apes live morally and peacefully, while humans seek power. Even if a mape found success, derailed by violence and social failure, society would likely reject such beings.
A visiting British forestry expert in New York condemned rain making experiments as sacrilege. Richard St Barte Baker, en route to Asheville to receive an honorary degree, called bombardment of clouds sad and unfair to neighbors who do not want the water.
Charlotte hosts the North Carolina chapter meeting where George E. Wilson Jr. is elected president and Asheville is chosen as the 1931 convention site. Clifton C. Carner of Washington, Chief Inspector of the Postal Service, headlined the banquet closing the two day program.
Washington reports a new U.S. crackdown on Czechoslovakia with plans to close the Czech consulate general in New York as Prague demands another reduction in American diplomatic staff. Morristown Tenn May 21 Most of the 35 state highway patrolmen assigned to maintain order at the shut down American Enka Corp plant were withdrawn for the weekend. A dwelling near the plant was stoned amid two days of attacks while five CIO Textile Workers were accused of violating an anti violence injunction. The union seeks 500 000 in damages from Enka and public officials alleging civil rights violations through injunctions and law enforcement.
Paratrooper Pte Neal Stewart of the 8250 Airborne Division plans to make 16 or more parachute jumps at Clinton airport to set a new world record and surpass a 75 jump unofficial mark. Weather permitting, the attempt will close air traffic during the stunt. Stewart, from Birmingham Alabama, has four parachute riggers assisting with gear.
Marlon W. Heiss, vice-president of Cone Mills, reports Japan’s cotton tex tile makers have renounced their prewar reckless competition. Heiss, leading a group of American and British textile executives, toured Japan and returned to Greensboro after a trip from San Francisco May 4. They met in Washington Thursday before his return.
Mrs. G. C. Burrell Jr., 31, mother of six, shot herself with a German luger pistol at her Perfection Mill village home between North Belmont and Mt. Holly. She was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital in serious condition after the 7 a.m. incident.
Willis Smith the senatorial candidate and Raleigh attorney voted in the Democratic primary with his six-member family, waiting about 15 minutes at the fire house polling site in Raleigh’s fourth precinct. Lon Willis Jr also voted at a different precinct.
A fire fed by chemical and tobacco dust swept through the Virginia Carolina Chemical Corp plant in Cincinnati, destroying four buildings with unofficial losses around 300000 dollars. The blaze occurred early today and caused extensive damage across the facility.
In Oak Ridge Tennessee officials faced the end of a four day holiday period as a walkout by 18 AFL and International unions idled about 3,000 workers and halted $250 million in government construction. AEC reported reactors, a lab, 450 dwellings and a high school affected plus $20 million in buildings and $227 million in separation plants. Union leaders urged men to return to work though prospects for early resolution looked slim before Memorial Day. Richard J. Gray wired union presidents to resume labor.
Hong Kong May 27 The Chinese Nationalists handed the Wanshan island to the Communist today, the Royal British Navy reported evacuation of the blockade base near Hong Kong completed by Nationalist ships at 8 am. The move opens Canton to foreign sea commerce for the first time in over eight months as a Royal Navy briefing notes a prior Nationalist victory claim.
Partly slowdy and warm tonight and Sunday. Widely scattered thunder showers, mostly in mountains, through the evening and Sunday afternoon. Expected to ease tonight with lingering chances of rain in the mountains. Highs warm with comfortable evenings and warmer afternoons inland.
Yesterday reached 95 degrees with a high, while today’s noon low sits at 73. One new rainfall total of 1.32 inches added, bringing May rainfall to date to 8.33 inches. The quota is 3.37 inches, leaving an excess of 1.76 inches.
A collision near Kings Mountain between a 1930 Ford auto and a Memphis to Charlotte bus killed four people in the auto. Victims are Everett M. Leonhardt 20 Grover Iris 17 wife of Leonhardt Mrs Joyce Aileen Leonhardt Mrs Alonzo Whitworth 37 of Grover and her two young daughters Gladys. Several others in the bus were injured and treated then released. Funeral rites for the four are planned Sunday at Allen Baptist Church near Kre.
Washington observers report a fresh dispute in the Amerasia case as former prosecutor Robert Mitchell Cocke states the Justice Department case collapsed once defendants learned major evidence was legally obtained. The matter involves unlawful removal of secret government documents found at Amerasia offices and Far Eastern affairs.
North Carolina voters gathered under scattered showers to choose among Frank P Graham Willis Smith and Hubert Reynolds for the remaining Senate term. Graham, aligned with Truman, faces pressure over PEPC and K honesty while Smith attacks his record. Runoff likely June 24 if no majority. Clyde Hoey seeks re election with no opposition. Six other House seats face nomination battles.
Washington May 27 The Federal Reserve Board reports industrial output at a new 13 month high through April 1949 with index figures around 149 percent of 1935 base. Commerce data show rising production and signs of persistent strength despite wartime adjustments. The report notes sustained gains in mining and manufacturing as postwar demand remains firm.
Edward Campbell, 19, of St Pauls was killed and three companions seriously injured in an early morning crash near Lumber Bridge. Survivors Jack Lee and Daney Horne of St Pauls and Ray Lee of Lakedale were rushed to hospital after their car swerved from the highway, plunged the stream at Little Marsh Creek, and overturned near dawn.
Gaston voters flocked to polls as the statewide primary drew a large turnout. In Gastonia Precinct No 1 about one fifth of 2,700 Democrats registered had voted by 11 am. Precinct reports indicated strong participation across 34 precincts and organizers expected totals near 10,000 to 15,000 with many candidates using cars and signs at polling places.
In Berlin on May 27 East Germany youth brigades paid homage to Soviet war dead while Western police patrolled the sectors. Amid minor incidents three East German officers abducted a German from the American sector and fired on Western police. British color police also seized two alleged Communist agents near a refugee. Over 3,000 Free German Youth members laid wreathes at a Soviet memorial built largely from stone from Hitler's former chancellery.
Registrars in Glaston county 3¢ precincts must call Election Chairman James Mullen at S311 after vote totals are calculated. Gaston county totals for Concessional and Senatorial races will be telephoned to Ral igh for state roundup.
