Washington reports the switchmen will begin wage hour talks with Western railroads on Tuesday instead of striking. About 6,000 switchmen are affected as unions seek a 40 hour week pay and seven cent raise, plus time and a half for Saturday and double time on Sunday. The walkout was postponed to June 1 after the National Mediation Board promised new talks to break the deadlock.
A brief North Carolina forecast notes party clouds and mild conditions. Gentle easterly breeze expected with no significant precipitation. Temperatures drift into the mid to upper sixties across coastal regions and low seventies inland.
A 600 ton munitions explosion last night ripped through South Amboy New Jersey and Perth Amboy causing at least 29 dead and over 300 injured. Officials say the damage runs into millions as glass rains and fires spread. Army Marines and Coast Guards rushed to the waterfront to secure the area while state police cordoned off streets.
Patricia Swarts, 16, an Englewood high school junior, was attacked near her South Side home after leaving a church social. She was stabbed nine times and died 40 minutes later at St Bernard’s hospital. Police say she fought back, kept hair clutched, nails broken, skull fractures reported. no rape. Parents say she left at 8 pm to play volleyball at Englewood Baptist church.

Paris and London report France pushing a dynamic foreign policy from the Schuman plan through Big Three and Atlantic Council talks. The approach seeks a “third force” in Western Europe focused on economic rebuilding, less sovereignty talk, and a united regional stance while remaining pro democratic defense. Smaller nations push for independence in the Atlantic Council, with Schuman urging cold war references be softened in communiques.
In Charlotte on May 20 officers and executives of Optimist International addressed the 18th Carolinas District convention. About 150 Optimists from across the Carolinas attended the gathering. The Opti Mrs auxiliary also met with Lucien Renuart, past president, to speak at tonight's banquet. Tommy Thompson, ice-president of Memphis, and Ray Millard, Optimist extension director of St. Louis, spoke today.

Polio may break records in 1950 with higher cases in the first sixteen weeks than the prior peak. Dr. Hart Van Riper notes 20 NYC cases by mid May vs 9 last year, and forecasts hinge on summer epidemics while care capacity improves nationwide.
Charlotte May 2. Mrs McCorkle 33 received 9 to 12 years in prison for shooting her husband Edward H McCorkle 47 in their Charlotte apartment on April 6. The Mecklenberg County court found her guilty of second degree murder after testimony alleging coercive acts by the husband.
Raleigh May 20 - Governor Scott's private secretary John Marshall denied soliciting liquor distillers for campaign funds. Williamson likewise denied involvement. The report, attributed to Lynn Nisbet, Spokane NC association, linked Marshall and Williamson to fundraising for Senator Frank Graham. Graham dismissed the claims as fantasy. Green and Johnson Jr. offered no corroborating evidence.
Washington May 20 Senators pressed for a full Senate inquiry into federal employment of homosexuals described as likely tools of Communist conspirators. An appropriations subcommittee report estimates 3,760 homosexuals in government jobs. The reports warn such individuals are security risks and vulnerable to blackmail.
Oregon's Wayne Morse won the Republican renomination, defying critics by promising independent voting on issues. In unofficial returns from 221 of 207 precincts Morse led Dave Hoover 64,270 to 37,417 with Morse projected to secure the nomination in a race long decided by party.
Washington reports the Justice Department investigates a Comptroller General Warren study claiming millions lost to fraud and waste in wartime contract settlements. GAO found evidence of excessive payments in a sample of contracts and urged repeal of the existing act for broader power to pursue cases.
In remarks across major cities on Armed Forces Day, leaders urged universal military training and extension of the draft to deter Soviet aggression. President Truman and Secretary Johnson pressed for draft renewal as Gen. Bradley warned of a possible Soviet atomic strike and Admiral Ingram urged rapid readiness.
Washington May 29 7 President Teemars civil rights plan moved toward shelving as a key campaign battle looms. A bid to create a permanent FEPC and extend anti poll tax and anti lynching protections drew mixed support. Senator Lucas pledged a bold attack on Southern Democratic foes, while Senator Taft questioned any chance of passage this session.
