President Kennedy travels to Nashville to appeal for rejecting prejudice amid sporadic racial violence. He stresses upholding the law, warns that defying court orders risks justice, and calls educated citizens to support desegregation while addressing the Tennessee Valley Authority anniversary in a period of civil rights debate.
National protesters in downtown Greensboro faced a heavy police response as 400 to 500 demonstrators from nearby college campus joined the eighth night of demonstrations against segregated facilities. Officers cited trespass and fire code violations as students blocked entrances at the Mayfair cafeteria Center and Carolina theaters. Police moved in with arrests while white onlookers clustered nearby amid rain and tense chants.
Mrs James L Moore, wife of Kannapolis publisher Abe S Moore, is believed to be the woman found dead abroad. The body showed head and neck injuries, with traveling funds missing from a London trip. Moore, longtime editor of The Kannapolis Daily Observer, said money was sent to cover return costs and noted his wife had a sister in China Grove.
Severe storms lashed Beaufost County and Chocowinity area injuring residents Harmon Acker and Barbara Taylor. Two tornadoes caused extensive property damage, including Big Swamp farm losses of about 20,000 dollars and 41,000 dollars on the Rawls farm. Debris scattered widely as homes barns and outbuildings were damaged or destroyed.
The United States, Britain, and West Germany delivered notes to Moscow rejecting Soviet protests over NATO nuclear plans. The notes argued such armament heightens the risk of war and urged international measures to reduce danger. They welcomed a proposed direct communications link but said broader risk-reducing steps were needed.
Argentina moved to bar Peronist followers from national elections as Jose Maria Guido froze candidates from the Pavanist faction and Popular Party. Only legislators were allowed to run, with Peronists facing immediate uncertainty and potential political repercussions.

Thruston Morton as potential contenders while denying backing any candidate. He also notes Rockefeller and others as possibilities, stressing the need to assess candidates who perform well in their states. Kennedy’s Vatican audience plans shift as Pope John XXIII health prompts changes.
