Gaston County picks Mother of the Year Mrs Puett
Mrs. John F. Puett of Dallas was named 1948 Mother of the Year by the Gaston County Merchants Association after beating 12 nominees. She spoke on WGNC radio on Mother's Day and welcomed seven of her nine children visiting home. The Dallas schoolteacher enjoyed her first orchid and first radio talk as callers congratulated her late Saturday. See MRS. PUETT, P-4.

Southern bloc backs George as Truman foe for nomination
Washington May 10. Senator Walter George of Georgia is being urged by southern Democrats to oppose President Truman for the Democratic nomination. Georgia's Senator Russell says George could be Georgia's States Rights candidate at the July Philadelphia convention. If backed, George may head the drive against Truman's civil rights program, with Jackson Miss., meetings of States Rights Democrats from ten states beginning today. Otherpossible contenders include Fielding Wright Douglas MacArthur Ben Laney. Russell and McClellan plan no campaign for Truman over anti segregation and anti lynching bills.
