Arabs and Jews observe a cease fire in the Holy City as a truce order takes effect. Egyptian volunteers report advancing about 30 miles into the Holy Land in a communique from Command Volunteers Southern Front Palestine.
Jerusalem announces a cease-fire to enable talks for a permanent truce. Arab leaders order a halt at noon, with British and UN observers present. In Burma, U Saw and five accomplices are executed for July 19 cabinet minister murders, ending a brutal coup attempt. The fate of the Jerusalem road remains a key sticking point, with Jews demanding it stay open and Arabs seeking control for aid deliveries to Jerusalem.
The State Utilities Commission approved relocation of Piedmont & Northern Railroad tracks through Gastonia after a Raleigh hearing. Three Gastonians and two railroad representatives attended. The ruling advances Gastonia and P N Railroads plan to lift tracks from Franklin Avenue and widen and resurface the street from city limit to city limit.
Jackson Miss May 8 Militant action against the national Democratic party will be taken at the states rights convention opening here Monday. Governor Fielding L Wright announced the revolt plan indicating the delegates aim to press the party to withdraw from civil rights policy and possibly walk out at the national convention. Thurmond and Walter George are named as possible presidential nominees with Laney or others considered for the chair.
President Truman celebrates his 64th birthday in Washington as a rail strike looms over his cross country travel plans. He will use the special presidential train for his transcontinental tour and attend a staff arranged birthday party today.
Chicago reports the looming railroad strike by about 190000 engineers firemen and switchmen could paralyze rail transport next Tuesday. The disruption would choke industries and households with millions affected as perishables shipments fall behind and food prices rise. Airlines and bus lines prepare for overflow while officials expect no immediate food shortages but a long strike could empty the larder.
Rev Dr W A Stanbury Gastonia district superintendent was elected a member of the judicial council of the General Conference of the Methodist Church in Boston joining four other clerics and four lay members. Mrs Thornbury 96 and Mrs Pickelsimer 66 with 14 living children are candidates for Mother of the Year.
The House Armed Services Committee warned the Soviet Union may risk a showdown with the United States and urged a strengthened ground and sea force through a manpower draft. It stated a 70-group air force cannot replace selective service. The panel noted Congress has approved expanding the air arm to 70 groups but has not acted on Truman's draft proposal.
In Dallas Mrs Paett leads voting in the Mother of the Year contest with yesterday's results. Mrs C P Robinson of Olney is second and Mrs J R Titman of Lowell third. Pauline Scruggs says Mrs Andy Thornburg of Bes semer City will receive oldest living mother award and Mrs Richard B Pickelsimer of Oakland Lowell wins for mother with most living children. Awards based on names submitted to the Merchants Association.

The White House renewed efforts to avert the nationwide railroad strike set for Tuesday. Presidential Assistant Steelman met four railroad carriers’ spokesmen as unions might be summoned later. Officials said the president remains hopeful for a settlement and discussed possible delays beyond May 11 if no agreement is reached.
In Gastonia the Southern Railway office issued an embargo on less car load freight effective Monday at 12:01 AM, in anticipation of a threatened walkout that could halt trains next Tuesday. The embargo covers most Southern Railway points and freight, affecting textile mills shipping yarns and other small loads. A prior embargo on livestock and perishable goods is already in effect. Local plants are warned that only full carload shipments will be accepted 48 hours before the strike deadline. Hoosier Scales Shop, 1821 West Franklin, owned by W. T. Arledge, has joined the Gastonia Chamber of Commerce.
The third anniversary of V E Day passed with little public notice in the United States. German mayors urged neighborly duty and aid to persecuted groups in a Frankfurt pamphlet while Vienna reported U S occupation leader Lt General Geoffrey Keyes pledging healing and reconstruction as the path to a stable enduring peace.
In Winsted, Connecticut, two year old collie Laddie faces a trial for life to be judged by the town board of selectmen. Petitions call for destruction over alleged viciousness, while owner Miss Barbara Scanlon and supporters argue shell shock from a dynamite blast caused Laddie to bite a newsboy. The board will hear both sides Monday night and Laddie will attend.
All state offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Confederate Memorial Day honoring North Carolina’s fallen in the War Between the States.
