Gas tonia reports April set a record for property damage from automobile wrecks. Police Capt. M. R. Short notes 63 collisions caused about 31 thousand dollars in wreckage, with 23 minor injuries and eight severe ones. Sixty percent were passenger cars. total damage to cars and other property exceeds 31 thousand dollars. Traffic enforcement will tighten, focusing on lights and stop signs to curb speed. no one killed in April.
The Union Road Volunteer Fire Department applied for a Class A rating from the North Carolina Fire Insurance Bureau. If approved, insurance rates for the district could drop. Chief John Steigelman expressed confidence, and county commissioners approved the department boundaries. The service area covers a residential zone within three miles of the station.

In Chattanooga Tennessee sixteen year old Evelyn Jenkins entered the 18th day of a planned 21 day religious fast for the glory of God. Evelyn joined the Voice of Faith Temple last fall and says she has never before been a church member. Reverend R C Cook described her appearance as delicate and Evelyn adds that it will be God's will whether she continues past the 21 day goal.
