East and West Berlin faced tense May Day gatherings with stone throwing and police intervention but no riot outbreak. Western crowds at Potsdamer Platz attacked Russia and Communism while East Berlinists rallied around Lustgarten, displaying Stalin pictures in a six hour parade. Moscow staged a massive Stalin reviewed May Day parade as nations marked International Labor Day. Joseph Henry Separk 79 a religious civic and industrial leader of Gastonia for half a century died at Gaston Memorial Hospital after a two week illness. He suffered a heart attack at his Fairmont Park home on April 14 and remained gravely ill. Funeral services were to be held at 4 PM at Main Street Methodist Church with Dr Joseph Owen and Dr W A Stanbury in charge. Burial followed in the Lepark family mausoleum Oakwood cemetery. Active pallbearers were nine nephews and many relatives. honorary pallbearers included Duke University officials and local leaders. McLean & Sons Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include a brother Wharton G Separk of Raleigh and a niece and several sisters and brothers-in-law. An obituary note places his long service starting May 21 1871 and significant ties to Oakland High School and the Methodist Church.
President Truman plans a 6400 mile westward tour visiting 16 states to press his fair deal program. Republicans including Taft Wherry and Gabrielson prepare to respond with their own speakers as Senator Brewster declares the fight will be continuous.

Russell, a 34 year old inmate at Pattfield county prison camp near Winnsboro, slipped away Saturday night while serving an 18 year sentence after turning state's evidence in the Salem Crossroads robbery. He is a native of Kershaw and has lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police search continues across area.
At least 14 people died violently over the weekend in the Carolinas and nearby areas. Among the dead were 14 year old Bobby Hammonds in Rockingham, several carnival workers Caleb DeLoach and Ethel Montjoy in a wreck near Franklinton, a marine pilot in Exercise Crossover near Camp Lejeune, J Melvin Dewey Gatewood in Leaksville, Marilyn Warren near Asheville, George Ray Bradshaw in East Gastonia, and Alvin Arndt in Gastonia. Coroners cited various causes including a car overturn and lightning.
A Duke Power Company foreman, Arndt, died after touching a live transformer while pushing a bolt through a wall during a substation project. Four coworkers revived him briefly but he succumbed to shock at 9 20. He leaves a wife, four brothers, a sister, and his father. Funeral services set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church Mount Holly with burial in Pineview Cemetery.
A 42-year-old man, Alvin Arndt of Mount Holly, at Duke Power substation, was electrocuted by contact with 2,300 volts and died after an hour and twenty minutes of revival efforts. An 18-year-old, George Ray Bradshaw, son of Mrs. W. F. Bradshaw, was struck by lightning while on Modena Street extension and found at 2:39 pm in an outhouse behind a residence.
The Gazette switches to a 32 page press from Gow Printing Press Company, replacing the old gear used since 1921. Installed by Joe Hrdina, the new press prints 28 000 papers per hour, allows color inserts, and handles four page signatures with wider columns and thinner pages for faster production.
Questions about the Clean up Paint up Fix up campaign in Gastonia draw replies from local residents. J C Luther, Seminole textile worker, says he has cleaned up his house, washed windows, and raked the yard with plans for more next week. Mrs J L Mc Swain of Union read says she has done cleaning around the house, raked, painted windows, and that her husband repaired screen doors while tending the garden.
J. R. Jenkins of 421 1/2 West Main Avenue says he has not done a great deal this week. He has painted indoors and raked around his house and plans to do more soon. The Gastonia resident spoke in a brief local update.
