Elkin residents with their brass band welcomed ex Lieut Gov Doughton on Tuesday evening returning from Rabitt to his home at Sparta. Citizens praised his work in securing state convicts to build a turnpike from Elkin to Sparta. Convicts now on the Jefferson road will be moved to the Sparta project when finished.

Tragedy Near Concord Ends In Fatal Shooting
Grover Page aged about 19 is shot and killed near Concord by Henry Walker. Page and Walter Blackwelder earlier intercepted at a house of ill repute. Walker, night watchman at a mill store, confronted them after entering his wife’s room. Blackwelder fired at Walker. none hit. Walker then killed Page with a single shot.

Gastonia Moves Toward a City Hospital Initiative
A Gastonia hospital plan gains traction after a town hall meeting led by Dr. S. A. Wilkins and Dr. L. N. Glenn. Leaders propose a $10,000 to $12,000 build fund with $25 stock shares to broaden citizen investment, expecting two to three years of support via churches and benevolent groups and eventual self-sufficiency.
