Cairo based radio reports say Libyan King Idris announced abdication due to age and inability to serve, but massive Tunisian style protests in Tobruk urged him to stay. The king then appeared and declared he would remain, citing popular appeal and duty to the nation.
Francis Galligan production manager at Firestone Textiles was named campaign chairman for Gastonia United Fund drive starting in October with a goal of 212,485, up 9.2 percent from last year. Galligan has led plant drives for years and helped raise 17,689 last year. Twenty six agencies participate including the Red Cross and Boy Scouts Piedmont Council with a September start for some divisions and an October report followed by a November kickoff. He succeeds Craig Watson as United Fund head and is a director and second vice president.
Polio Steering Committee offers transport to Sabin vaccination at 26 school sites today from noon to afternoon. Volunteers arrange rides via UN 44031 or UN 5522. Dr Andrew C Miller chairs the effort urging residents to visit the nearest clinic.
Dr Miller announces Sunday vaccination blitz across many schools including Rise Elementary Lucia Elementary Mount Holly High and Gastonia Elementary. A 25 cent Sabin vaccine donation is asked but no one will be refused for inability to pay as the Gaston County Medical Society aims for 100 percent vaccination participation. Clinics run Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. and will be open at participating sites.
Saigon reports Premier Khanh's government protested to Cambodia over the downing of a U.S.-piloted spotter plane by Cambodian fighters while apologizing for an attack on the Chauteen border village. Talks move toward settling their frontier dispute as双方 reaffirmed responsibility for the clash and pledged restraint pending further negotiations.
Washington's Tanda Felber, 18, of Colfax, won America's 1964 Junior Miss after a dramatic reading from Shaw's Sint Joan. First runner up Connie Lockwood of James Town, second runner up Stephanie Lee of Los Alamos, Calif. Fifth is Linda Cave of Warwick, Rhode Island.
A temporary restraining order was issued in U S District Court by Judge Henry Brooks to avert a walkout by four unions at Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The strike could have affected about 5000 workers across multiple crafts. Unions blame management for stalling work rules talks and seek separate talks with LAN reps.
Lt. Harold W. Welch 24 of Detroit, navigator of the downed plane, was rescued from East Germany and transported to Wiesbaden for treatment after surviving a crash and a long hold by the Communists. His fellow fliers Capt. David Holland and Capt. Melvin Kessler remain missing. Welch’s release followed a Soviet hospital stay in Magdeburg and a return through Hannover and the U.S. Air Force hospital system.
DETROIT AP A taxi driver and his wife learn their 23 year old son Lt Harold W Welch is safe with American forces after being shot down over Communist Germany March 11. The Welchs say they feel a mix of relief and lingering worry while awaiting full details and possible contact.
Washington AP President Johnson outlined a new approach to the Panama dispute inviting talks at any time and place. He framed a plan with a special representative to pursue a solution honoring Panamanian claims and U.S. interests, while signaling that formal diplomatic ties must precede talks. Panamanian anger eased as Miguel Moreno and de Lavalle welcomed the move, with Rusk to meet the proposal. Johnson also dismissed worries about Kennedy aides leaving and noted Salinger’s California Senate bid did not unsettle him.
