Landers Chapel Methodist Church Youth Fellowship held a Saturday night costume party at the club house with a St. Patrick's Day motif. Winners were Beth Carpenter and Carter Quinn for best costumes. refreshments followed.
Mrs. Albert Varalli and sons hosted Sunday with Ted Willis in Dallas. Other gatherings included J. S. Abernethy and Roy Abernethy visiting Charlotte and Lincolnton residents visiting Winston-Salem, Lincolnton, Bessemer City, Gastonia, and High Shoals. Families named include Abernethy Ratchford Hester and More.
James Gudger Stickeleather Sr. 75, former state highway commissioner and prominent Asheville real estate man, died at his daughter’s home in Biltmore Forest. A native of Iredell County, he was active in civic, political, business and religious life and campaigned to reduce industrial waste in North Carolina streams. His wife Nancy Weaver Stickeleather died in 1945.
A large Olney congregation heard Rev. W. T. Mulray, Africa missionary, at both services. Installation for Rev. A. L. Bixler occurred at the evening. Various locals hosted gatherings, youth officers were elected, and several families visited relatives in nearby towns. Multiple members attended 4-H events and church activities, with notes on health and travel of associated families.
Raleigh reports officials say NC draft boards might mobilize overnight in a national emergency. Adjutant General J. Van B. Metts notes NC holds records for 966,425 residents aged 18 to 45 who registered in World War II. He suggests last war's 155 boards could serve until new ones form.
