Senator Culberson recounts a tale of an old Brownsville resident famed for temper and Methodist piety. After a bully shot one of his hounds, the man vowed he could whip any man on the Rio Grande, especially if the hound was killed.
Jacob M. Gheen 20, an Old Mill operative, was found dead in an outhouse at his father J R Gheen’s Loray house near Tren ton Mill. Doctors cite heart trouble. no inquest. He worked Tuesday night then disappeared and died early Wednesday. He leaves two brothers and two sisters. Body sent to Newport Tennessee for burial.
Mrs. Robert H. Smith, age 48, died at her home Thursday from tuberculosis. Born September 12, 1858 in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter of Jefferson Glover. Survived by husband Robert H. Smith and children Oscar P. Smith Manarvier M. Smith Jennie A. Smith M. Ernest Smith Robert Lee Smith. She was a Baptist, joined at 14. Funeral held at home with Rev. J. A. Hoyle. burial at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.
Lamanda P Brown longtime Southern Railway conductor from Gastonia died after being crushed between couplers on a Charleston division train in Lancaster SC. He was wife living at Greenville SC and survived by sister Mrs B B Jones of Kings Mountain. His body transported to Greenville for burial. Deceased son of the late Robert Brown and raised in Gastonia.
Speaker Cannon of the United States House of Representatives has consented to address Guilford College for the approaching commencement at the end of May.
The Jasper Light Infantry inspection is set for April 16. County offices report busy tasks from tax collections to record keeping while noting strong cotton sales. Miss Katie Templeton dies near Yorkville aged 94, with interment in Yorkville cemetery. Delinquent taxes are projected at five to six thousand dollars, mainly due to double entries and relocations.
