The Georgia firm Wright Contracting Company of Columbus won the Franklin avenue widening and paving contract with a bid of 605488.15, about 35000 below rivals. He said she died before air was injected and he could not explain his actions describing a moment of “something snapped” after seeing her face.

Members of the Gastonia Industrial Diversification Commission expressed surprise today at action by Gastonia businessmen who asked the Gaston county commissioners to step in to eliminate tax support for the commission. Commission members said the group showed an amazing lack of information and claimed the chamber of commerce already covers industrial expansion. The commission stressed its cooperation with the chamber and noted its limited budget and the commission’s work has increased taxable property well beyond its costs. The commission spokesman urged that the chamber be consulted in such matters.
Fire devastates two Shelby firms causing an estimated loss of 200000 to 350000 with no injuries. Gaston county seeks more time for a county health center plan, approving Dr. Ramsaur’s larger 100000 building and requesting a mid June extension from the Medical Care Commission.
Wake County grand jury has indicted Raymond Hair 23 a Wake Forest College student for the December 15 slaying of Roy Cable 20 a former student. Hair's trial is set for April 5 in Wake Superior Court. The case was delayed by courtroom crowd and juror availability.
Gaston county is assured a fair share of state road improvements under a $200 million highway program. Joe Graham of Lincoln County, chairman of the Ninth Highway Division, told county commissioners that the plan allocates a generous Gaston portion with no county discrimination. The Gastonia to Dallas road is confirmed as ready for a contract, as state work moves toward Raleigh to finalize the details.
Rep Graham Barden of North Carolina blames the Roman Catholic Church for defeats in federal aid to education, accusing Cardinal Spellman of New York of taking an authoritarian stance. He spoke at a conference of the Committee on Federal Aid to Public Education, a nationwide civic group.
A federal jury found Judith Coplon and Valenttin Gubitchev guilty of conspiracy to commit espionage and attempted espionage. Coplon was acquitted on one count, while Gubitchev was convicted on counts for conspiracy and attempted espionage stemming from removing and attempting to receive classified documents. Sentencing was postponed to Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for both defendants.
Raleigh March 1 Contractors will submit bids Thursday for a 000,000 addition to the education building. Alternate bids are requested for a structure of five and six stories. Bids will be opened in the office of buildings and grounds superintendent George Cherry.

Gaston county commissioners aim to craft a county wide plan to extend fire protection to rural homes funded from tax money. They will nominate residents to a state committee on rural protection and discuss arrangements with local departments including Gastonia to dispatch trunks and mobile hydrants, with the county underwriting outside call fees to reduce insurance rates.
