Weather forecast for the Gaston region shows increasing clouds and a chance of showers. Highs near 60s, with lows around 40s, and winds turning west to northwest. Weekend rain chances persist across North and South Carolina and Virginia, with cooler Sunday clearing in some areas.
Heavy combat raged around Sepone as North Vietnamese forces pressed into Laos with South Vietnamese infantry and US air strikes. The Saigon command reported 452 enemy soldiers killed, 88 helicopters destroyed or damaged, and dozens of weapons seized, with eleven Americans missing and several killed or wounded among Vietnamese and allied troops. Large U.S. airlifted troops supported the operation as forces pushed toward Sepone, 25 miles west of the frontier, signaling deep penetration in the Laotian campaign opened February 8.

Also William Jackson of Mount Pleasant area to be buried at Mt Pleasant AME Zion Cemetery after a service at Kingdom Hall Moya Street. Family visitation tonight at Carothers Funeral Home Elmont.
U Thant appealed to Egypt and Israel to abstain from shooting as cease fire talks stretched toward Sunday. He urged Israel to withdraw occupation forces to boundary lines from the 1967 war, while UN delegates met with the Big Four to push for renewed peace efforts. Egypt demanded withdrawal to pre 1967 lines and warned against ceding Gaza and Jerusalem areas.
Three corporations and four individuals face federal charges in San Diego and Dallas for interstate shipment of obscene material and conspiracy to mail obscenity. The case concerns a 352 page illustrated edition marketed as The Illustrated Presidential Report of the Commission on Obscenity and Pornography. The government reports versions vary in price and text length.
Washington AP The U S Department of Agriculture updated its designation of areas where farmers threatened by corn blight can substitute other crops such as soybeans. An emergency substitution plan will permit farmers to plant blight resistant cow seed and still earn credits for crop participation in peal support programs.
North Carolina's unemployment rate jumped to 3.5 percent in January, the highest in six years except for a brief June–July surge. The Employment Security Commission cited higher joblessness among older workers and graduates, with textiles showing the largest factory job losses and overall manufacturing shedding about 9,980 positions.
The Pioneer Girl Scout office reports 12 175 cartons of cookies to sell in a 43 year old annual drive. Proceeds fund spring camping for girls needing aid and support local projects in Gastonia and surrounding areas. Nearly 5 000 scouts will take part with sales teams led by volunteers and neighborhood troops.
Floodwaters recede in Lumberton North Carolina allowing evacuation of about 175 families. National Weather Service in Columbia DC reports the crest passed and river stages easing near six feet with some residents returning home while a few remain displaced.
In a Greensboro scene, Sen. Jue Allsbruck and Sen. Wy Melendondo clash over a resolution urging Vice President Agnew to accept an invitation to the Greater Greensboro open golf tournament. The measure proposed a $560 for golf lessons and a $1,000 medical bond if injuries occur, but was defeated after debate.
