Belmont police Officer Ben Willis responded to a two vehicle collision. A woman stood beside her smashed compact crying for a baby. The uninjured owner later claimed the small car, saying, That's my life car.
A cluster of local obituaries notes Henry Winston-Sali Dow of Winston-Salem among the deceased and lists numerous survivors and funeral plans. Other notices include Lois Whisnant Mull of Bessemer City, John Henry Hensley of Gastonia, Laurina Crow Wood of Gastonia, and W. Smith of Gastonia with service details, church affiliations, and burial arrangements.
Firefighters battled a trailer house blaze at Belt Awe in Catawba Heights. An elderly resident was awakened by the alarm, but the flames were too far advanced to save the structure. Damage was estimated at seven thousand dollars.
Dr Woodrow Sugg and Publicity Chairman Bill Jumper greeted Rathie Stuart at Douglas Municipal Airport Tuesday morning and accompanied her to Gastonia. Stuart will present the travelogue New Zealand Tonight at Ashley High School auditorium, following a prior missed appearance last November.
Gastonia council votes to lease two new uptown parking lots to local firms, creating 34 and 80 car spaces respectively and converting an alley behind Main Ave into bus access. The action follows a prior rescission and aims to boost off street parking tied to a bus terminal plan. The Presbyterian Church lot remains city owned and partly expanded for traffic needs.
The town council unanimously creates a seven member Recreation Commission to oversee all noneschool recreation, fund future programs, and seek appropriations. Mayor Rankin will nominate and the board will approve members, with initial readiness to meet by June 1.
An 8-year-old Gastonian named Henry Williams, a deckhand on a tugboat, drowned after falling into a canal at Houma Louisiana while checking a passing light before daybreak Monday. The captain heard a splash and believed Williams fell overboard. his body was not recovered. The canal was part of the Intrastate Waterway.
A frigid system blights the region with snow flurries sleet and rain, foretelling more cold weather tonight and Wednesday. Temperatures may dip around 20 in many areas as clouds, wind, and continued cold grip North and South Carolina with partial clearing and a risk of lingering precipitation.
Miss Alice Watson died Sunday in Cramerton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church Clover D C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body was at the home in Cramerton at 5 p.m. Costner Funeral Home is in charge.
Rennie Boyce Tessenar, 30, was cleared of a morals charge involving a 10-year-old girl as Judge George B. Patton nonsuited the case for lack of sufficient evidence. A related rape charge was not pursued with leave by Sol. Max L. Childers. Also, John Jenkins Jr. of Oakland Street Lowell was convicted Monday on incest, but sentencing was delayed.
Dallas resident Policy Cloninger Jr a three year term public figure was slightly injured Monday when a City Coach Co bus rammed the rear of his stationary wagon on the Dallas Cherryville road. Passenger WS Stillwell 48 also sustained bruises and abrasions. State Patrolman H Hemphill said Cloninger stopped to yield at an intersection and the following bus failed to stop. Bus driver John Roger Garter 41 of Lowell was charged with following too closely. Cloninger’s vehicle sustained 200 dollars damage while the bus had 10 dollars.
A Lowell council session discussed a potential sale of the dog pound. Councilman Colt Robinson Jr. said a buyer emerged but the town, through Mayor Harold Rankin, indicated no sale. The pound site near the old fair building remains in use for stray dogs awaiting county dog warden pickup, so Lowell will not sell it, at least for now.
