An opinion poll in Gastonia features Jimmy Black and several locals arguing about police in summer. Respondents favor comfort, suggesting short sleeves and no ties, as long as officers remain recognizable.
Salt Lake City police answered a 3 am call from a drive in theater tele phone booth reporting a couple asleep during a movie. The gates were locked and the theater manager freed them. The man was not sure if he was with his wife. The incident prompted a cautious police remark about sleep.
Mrs Mary Bright formerly lived on the New Hope road with her daughter Mrs Rudy R Burke has moved to the Shady Lawn rest home on South York street Burke who is connected with the Orthopedic Hospital is now residing in the nurses home at the hospital.

Robert Cheshire returns to Darnell Apartments from Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota, reporting satisfactory condition.
Miss Lodema Carringer, whose fiancé G. Snipes is planning a wedding on August 18, was honored at a Friday evening shower at Firestone Girls Club. The event featured pastel blossoms, white carna tions, and a miniature bridal scene at the head table. Guests played games, received prizes, and enjoyed an ice course, individual cakes, and lard iced drinks reflecting a green and white motif.
Members of the Long Creek Home Demonstration Club serve homemade ice cream and cake at Mrs. Wayne Whitesides home near Bessemer City tonight. Serving starts at 7 PM and proceeds go to Gaston County School for the Handicapped.

The Town of Lowell surpassed its fundraising goal for the Gaston County Center for Handicapped Children by raising 658.45 dollars toward the 500 dollar target. Police Chief Johnny Wallace led the drive with committee heads named for Mt. Holly and Bessemer City, Henry Fowler in Mt. Holly and Mrs. J. W. Bury with Mrs. Lois Smith in Bessemer City.
Three year old Gary Farmer was bruised about the head chin and arms after being struck Friday afternoon by a 1953 Ford near his home at 159 Dixon Circle. Driver Tesser Leroy Hicks 48 said the boy ran into the car path at about 25 to 30 mph. he was not seriously hurt and taken to Gaston General Hospital. Officers Bell and Ferguson reported.
Ane nie Bosquet a 35 year old French racing driver died from a fractured skull when her German Porsche sports car overturned on a hairpin turn during the first hour of a 12 hour race at Reims. Her co driver Miss Isabel Haskell of Palm Beach Florida had not yet taken her turn.
Manila observes a five day event marking the tenth anniversary of Philippine independence with the main celebration set for Wednesday July 4. Vice President Richard Nixon will attend as a special guest.
A 21-year-old Smithfield man, Bobby Ward, was sentenced to 10 years for assault, 15 years for breaking and entering in an assault, and 45 to 60 years plus 10 years for two crimes against nature involving a 9-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy. He faced a total of 75 to 95 years in prison after pleading no defense yesterday. The victim, Mildred Wright, 21, is hospitalized with facial wounds.
The Gastonia unit of the North Carolina Civil Rescue Association launches a fundraising drive with donation containers in Gaston Cleveland and Mecklenburg counties. The organization, a direct auxiliary to National Civil Defense, offers fire forest storms floods and major wreck rescue services and distributes air raid instructions locally.

In federal court Judge Lawrence Walsh dismissed a 27 million dollar case brought by 16 steamship companies against the Panama Canal Co. The firms charged overcharging toll rates and sought a reduction but the judge said he lacked jurisdiction.

Mrs Frances R Kaush tried to start her 1952 car in Denver but failed. A stranger pushed the car for blocks without success. She left the keys in the vehicle and returned two hours later to discover it had been stolen.
