Parole chief to return to Greensboro Daily News work

Paroles Commission chairman Jack L. Scism, facing abolition of the current board by a new law, says he will return to his former role as a reporter for the Greensboro Daily News. Abuse of power hearings resume in Cumberland County

The Cumberland County grand jury prepared to resume hearings into Sheriff Otts Jones accused of abusing office powers for political aims. Nine witnesses testified for about three hours, including State Bureau of Investigation agents. District Attorney Grannis Jr. said Jones was not called to testify and would not be subpoenaed. The probe concerns an affidavit alleging Jones tried to use a warrant to pressure Democratic Party official Adam Metcher Hales to back his reelection.

Settlement OK’d for Injured Student in N C Bus Crash

In Raleigh a $70,000 settlement fund for Yancey County student Liss Haney, 16, burned in a school bus crash, was approved by a General Assembly special appropriations panel, pending full approval. Also allowed was a $151 appropriation to aid victims of the 1975 Siloam Bridge collapse that killed four and injured others. Haney, paralyzed from the waist down, survived the crash blamed on a faulty brake, with state aid previously under $1,000.

Miss Slack Teenage World winners crowned in Raleigh pageant

Yvonne Hene Ratchford, 17, of Fayetteville, won Miss Slack Teenage World of North Carolina and will compete in the national pageant in Rusmoke, Virginia. Aliss Ratchford claimed Miss Talent and Miss Together awards and a four year college scholarship. Other finalists included Rene Relves, Felicia Wirablsa, Karen Lynn Scott, and Velma Louise Credle. Eleven competitors aged 17 to 25 participated in the Meredith College event.
