The body of Lt. Elbridge C. Robinson, jet pilot killed when his P-86 exploded over Chesapeake Bay, is en route home for burial. He will be laid to rest Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia with services at 4 pm. burial at Oakwood Cemetery. He is survived by parents, sister, brother, grandmother, and was a Langley Field trainee.

Crash Claims Flyer's Life in Goldsboro Area
GOLDSBORO June 24. Robert Wien 35 of Kannapolis died when his Piper Cub crop duster crashed near a Raleigh highway seven miles outside Goldsboro after striking high tension wires. The Aero Dusters owned plane and John W Stone Jr said he signalled airman to water the wires and the pilot appeared to miscue just before impact. The aircraft burst into flames seconds after the crash.

Gaston County voters flocked to 34 precincts in a light turnout for a minor primary. Frank Graham and Wildis Smiths led in the senatorial race while Woodrow Jones challenged Rutherfordton’s in Congress. Constables were nominated in four townships as polls opened at 6:30 and closed at 6:30. Early counts showed turnout below May levels, with some boxes ahead of four weeks ago by about 20 percent.

The University of California fired 157 faculty and staff who refused to sign loyalty statements denying membership in the Communist Party. The dismissals, effective June 30, followed a board of regents meeting upholding President Sproul’s recommendations after a 14 month dispute over anti Communist clauses.
