Berlin, June 24. The Soviets cut power to western sectors and halted all rail food shipments in western Germany. Allied leaders pledge to resist, while reports say Russia aims to force Western withdrawal and set up a separate governing body in eastern Germany. Water and currency controls spark further tensions.
Johnson faces Kerr Scott in the Democratic runoff for governor this Saturday and will address Gaston county voters with a Raleigh speech aired by WGNC at 8 45 p m. The 15 minute talk ends at 9 00 p m and is promoted by Bob Abernethy urging Gaston democrats to keep radios on WGNC.

Western allies face a potential move by Russia and seven satellite states to establish a separate government in eastern Germany as a response to plans for federalizing western Germany. Jimmie Mitchem reports a late night return to find his wife Edith wounded and Rhonda Pearl Mitchem dead, with deputies recovering a note and evidence suggesting murder and possible suicide.

In Philadelphia at Convention Hall on June 24 the first 32 states reported unofficial totals in the second Republican presidential ballot. Dewey led with 332 votes, Taft had 126, Stassen 98, Vandenberg 59, Warren 54, MacArthur 1, and Joe Martin 9, placing Dewey 39 votes ahead of his initial tally while Taft gained 34 votes.
Bishop John J. Swint of Wheeling warns Catholic girls to avoid beauty contests or face excommunication. He calls pageants totally pagan and absolutely immoral and says the public exposure of girls is indecent. Gertrude Redway quit a local contest after the bishop insisted on withdrawal.
A bolt of lightning on the Charleston Country Club golf course killed George D. Paul, son-in-law of Senator Burnet R. Maybank, and injured six others. The incident occurred yesterday in Charleston, South Carolina.
Soft coal operators discussed a contract with John L. Lewis promising wage and pension boosts for the United Mine Workers. Proposed terms include a 12 to 15 cent per hour wage rise and royalty fund levy up to 15 cents per ton. Southern operators and captive mine interests oppose the terms. The Truman emergency board gave until 4 p.m. today to reach a peace pact or extend the current agreement, a 24 hour extension. The White House approved the delay after progress toward a settlement.
Oklahoma City June 4 dispatch reports 300 residents evacuated from Whitefield as the Canadian River crest advances. Across the state nine drowned and 3,000 homeless amid widespread flooding. Deer Creek flash flood, Okmulgee Creek forcing 2,000 from homes. Weather bureau foresees gradual relief amid further rainfall.
Lexington report says W. Boyd Riley aged 29 of near Thomasville has been acquitted of charges stemming from the Mothers Day pistol slaying of his father in law.
Jack Dempsey born June 4 1895 fought 69 bouts winning 47 by knockout. He drew record gate receipts and later prospered as businessman and referee after retiring in 1932. He won the 1929 heavyweight title from Jess Willard, with early bouts in western mine camps and growing popularity after retirement.
