The Gazette awarded dictionaries to the top journalism student at each of Gaston County’s eight high schools. Winners include Paula Teeter of South Point, Pat Ensley of East Gaston, Sandra Beam of Cherryville, Becky Boxler of Bessemer City, Rebecca Moore of Ashbrook, Jennings Fort of North Gaston, Kelly Connor of Gaston Day, and Laura Alexander of Hunter Huss.

Motorcycle crash near Belmont claims wife and leaves rider critical
A 21 year-old Belmont man, Danny Carver, remains in critical condition at Charlotte Memorial Hospital after a motorcycle crash that killed his wife, Brenda Carver, 22. The accident happened when he tried to avoid a head-on collision in a curve near the Belmont Drive-In on Belmont Drive.

Funeral Friday 3 pm at South Gastonia Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Olney Cemetery Gastonia. Body lies in state 30 minutes prior. Silk Funeral Home Bessemer City will host visitation tonight 7:30 to 8:30. Laura Rena Hopper Clover SC 8 died Wednesday in York hospital. Survived by six sons J,Lloyd, Paul, Lloyd and Robert Hopper all of Clover and Linden Hopper of Charlotte. five daughters including Ruth Dawkins. Funeral Friday 4 pm at First Baptist Church with burial in Woodside Cemetery. M L Ford & Sons Funeral Home tonight 7 to 3. Gevis Virginia Leming Carroll Clover SC 54 of Rt 3 died Wednesday at Gaston Memorial. Survived by husband Davis P Carroll, son Dwight Carroll of Clover, parents Harley and Virgie Leming of Clover, brothers Billy Leming Gastonia Vance Leming Clover, sisters Elly Beil Shelby Irene Lewin Gastonia. Funeral Friday 1 pm in M L Ford & Sons Chapel, burial Pattersay Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Kings Mountain. Visitation tonight 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
