A farmer wife muses on cool nights and hot days, grateful for rain that feeds beans, squash, corn, and okra. She recalls canning greens, plans fall plantings, complains about store delays, and laughs at old sayings while hoping for steady weather and brighter days.
Gaston County Home Demonstration Clubs plan a $400 loan fund for H. T. Beam, a former 4-H member now studying for the ministry. The money will cover music lessons for his college course, aiding his voice training while he pursues theology. The fund honors deceased club members. Beam aids churches and community projects with his talent.
Luther G. Sisk Jr. notes beekeeping success requires effort and disease control. In Surry County farmers range from one to two hives to about two hundred. Kyle Thompson operates about one hundred hives on a farm. C. C. Thompson has about two hundred hives but farms less. Moving hives to eastern North Carolina yields extra honey, including 200 pounds from eastward sites plus 100 pounds sourwood after return. Local beekeepers secure orders as far west as Oregon.
Lincolnton reports farm agent J. Graham Morrison of Lincoln County suffered a severe hand wound while placing a brass ring in a Jersey bull. The bull jerked and Morrison required fourteen stitches, then completed the task with the injured hand. The bull belonged to James Ramsur on his farm.
