Local families host weekend visitors in Lowell

Mr and Mrs Ralph Caldwell and children from Tarboro entertained and hosted numerous relatives from Dallas Stanley Gas tonia Belmont and Concord area for weekend visits and Sunday meals including Mrs Caldwell and family. Funeral attendees for Danny Harrelson in Concord Methodist Church included many local residents. Mrs B L Whitener and daughters from Columbia SC visited Lowell for dinners and church events with I J Harris Jr and family. A large Baptist church Bible school program closed with Nathaniel Elliott leading. enrollment reached 1689 with 149 average. Presbyterian and Woodlawn church groups attended meetings at Kings Mountain Presbytery Camp and Fruitland Memory Tournament winners were Carol Elliott Brenda Huffstetler. Audrey Hoover III and daughters visited with Dr J W Reid at Sparrow Springs cottage.

Weevil Infestation in Gaston County Rises Slightly

Gas ton county reports a rising boll weevil infestation with 10 percent across 13 check farms, though no single farm exceeds two percent. Farm Agent Paul Kiser urges continued field checks and notes 1955 patterns warn against hasty treatments until at least 10 percent on one farm. Several farms show 1 2 percent levels, others with no infestation. some reports missing. Local residents and visitors described.

Real Estate Man Returns From Georgia Redmen Convention

Charlie Wallace, local real estate dealer and national chairman of the Degree of Pocahontas of the Great Council of the United States, returned Thursday from Buford, Georgia after attending the Georgia state convention of Redmen. He traveled with Rose Quinn. Wallace attended the event and represented Bryan Hurd of Cramerton.

State bus driving contest honors given to north carolina youths

Dan Shannon of Gastonia and Betty Jean Massey of Mount Holly each received a $25 savings bond from the Gaston County Merchants Association for participating in the state bus driving contest. District 6 representatives from Gaston and Lincoln counties competed in Chapel Hill. Robert Dunn of Orange County and Allee Pritchett of Greensboro won the first North Carolina school bus drivers contest, earning $300 scholarships and a trophy. Local judges Martel Beam, Tom Moore, and Paul Hallman presided as 56 drivers competed.

Bill To Finance Courts Passed by Senate and House

Washington reports the Senate and House approved a compromise bill funding State and Justice departments and federal courts at 548,930,957 dollars, 50 million less than President Eisenhower requested, and sent it to the White House for signature.

Emmett Morrison Jr of 372 North Edgemont avenue named acting superintendent of Burlington Industries Flint No. 2 Plant by J D Barbee. Morrison assumes charge during civil defense poster distribution period following Supt Sproull's heart attack and convalescence. Morrison, son of Mr and Mrs S E B Morrison, attended Gastonia High, McCallie, and NC State College earning a BS in textiles. The Civil Rescue Association plans to auction posters in Cramerton in June 1953 and distribute them to home and business owners with pocket sizes.

Gastonia Holds To Sixth Spot In Building

Gastonia remains sixth among North Carolina cities with over 10,000 population in construction. Five month permits total 2,914,825 while Charlotte leads with 14,918,678. Cities ahead include Durham Greensboro Raleigh and Winston Salem. May permits show Gastonia eighth with 713,775 as Charlotte tops 6,590,963.

TPA Delegates Return From Nation Convention in Baltimore

Guy Ladd and Clyde Wallace of Post P Travelers Protective Association of America returned from the national convention in Baltimore with North Carolina representation including 32 delegates and four children. Ladd led NC in new member signups with 12 in April and 16 for the year. A dues drive runs to June 30. Wallace, secretary treasurer, at 192 West Franklin Ave, will forward dues to Winston Salem. Also noted: US milk cow count fell 11 percent in 1954 and Minnesota reports 22,380 professional teachers.

Shine Parlor Break-In Reported in Gastonia

Gastonia detectives Brittain and Hasketh report a Wednesday night break-in at Floyds shoe shine behind Main Avenue News Stand. Entry came through a skylight. About $50 in dollars and change stolen from a box chained to the floor. thieves broke the container. Third-shift officers found the scene around 2 oclock Thursday morning.
