Washington June 22. The Senate approved a stop gap fifteen day extension of the draft law, sending the measure to the House. The action, on a voice vote, delays the midnight deadline to July 3 as Senate leaders fear a longer extension cannot be completed in time. The House already passed a two year extension while the Senate considers a three year version with presidential drafting authority preserved. The debate touched on race integration orders and proposed controls over drafting, with opposition labeling the move highly political.
Career diplomat Joh S. Service testified publicly before the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee denying McCarthy’s charge that he aided Chinese Communists. He said he fought Chinese domination and asserted innocence in the Amerasia case from 1945, in which papers were seized but he was not indicted.

President Truman said the country cannot pay for a 70 group air force, noting the ceiling is about budget limits rather than a fixed size. He explained actual force size depends on Congress appropriations with current air groups around 48 and both chambers debating authorization and a Senate House compromise.
A Grumman Tigercat aircraft on a night training flight from Maxwell Field Alabama to Cherry Point Marine Station disappeared over Hampstead North Carolina near Wilmington. The pilot of the other plane reported an explosion beneath the missing craft as it neared its destination and a search of about twenty planes began. Names of the crew were not released.

RALEIGH June 2. Attorney General Harry McKful lan said beer sales on election day are legal though laws remain unclear. He noted the office believes beer is exempt from a state wide ban on intoxicating liquors on election days.
Alabama legislature, with no dissent, declared it will not permit intermingling of white and Negro children in public schools. Two resolutions condemn Supreme Court rulings on segregation as a threat to southern civilization, demanding protection of state laws and rights against federal interference. Senator George Quarles introduced the measures in Dallas County. The court rulings cited include Oklahoma and Texas cases ordering desegregation.
Chicago dispatch reports looming nationwide rail tieup as switchmen wage and hour board recommendations are rejected. Two unions gain strike rights July 15, with Rock Island and Western Pacific threatening Sunday stoppages if switchmen walk. AFL Switchmen’s Union rebuffs presidential board on Great Western lines and others, cooling off since May 19.
