Pension plan wins in miner case at Washington court
Justice T Alan Goldsborough allowed John L Lewis to proceed with a 100 monthly pension for miners aged 62 with 20 years in the pits. Ezra Van Horn had sought a court order to block payments from the United Mine Workers welfare fund. The court found the plan reasonable and not in violation of the 1947 coal contract or Taft Hartley. Lewis and Senator Styles Bridges backed the plan, setting aside 5 million of the 45 million fund to start payments.
