Belmont coroner ruled the death of Evelyn McKinney a self inflicted tragedy after she sat on a railroad track near Cagle Mill crossing and was struck by a Southern Railway train. The 52 year old woman, found with a note indicating intent to take her life, died at the scene near Belmont. The driver, Engineer J M Smith, saw her seated with her head between her knees and could not stop in time. The body was moved to Bungardner Funeral Home.
Saigon AP report says a U.S. four engine transport crashed at An Khe Airport after crew attempted to abort takeoff due to a mechanical fault. Thirty four perished, including Americans and South Vietnamese. two survived. The regular passenger flight carried military personnel and civilians. The clumsy takeoff ended with the aircraft skidding beyond the runway into a gulley and burning.
Houston AP Cassius Clay fights a US district court trial Monday for refusing the draft oath. Conviction could bring up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Clay, a self described Black Muslim minister, argues exemption and alleges racial bias in draft boards.
Western observers voiced little surprise as China announced it had successfully detonated its first hydrogen bomb. The test, described as over western China near Lop Nor, follows five prior nuclear tests since Oct. 16, 1984, and is viewed in Washington and Tokyo as a notable yet restrained advancement in Beijing’s arms program.
Washington AP Military Writer Fred Hoffman reports that Red China’s sixth nuclear test did not alter Pentagon views of a roughly eight year window before China could threaten the United States with a significant missile force.
