Miss Raleigh wins North Carolina title in a statewide televised contest. The event crowned Miss Nevin Cava fina in front of judges and spectators, with a field of ten finalists narrowed from an earlier round. Contenders from Cabarrus, Winston-Salem, Lincoln, and other counties competed in talent, swimsuit, and evening gown segments.
AP dispatch reports Rep. L Mendel Rivers, chair of the House Armed Services Committee, blaming the war on policies echoed by the Pentagon and calling for heavy spending to modernize the Navy. He criticizes the Vietnam conflict as political, opposes the draft, and argues for a volunteer force with substantial defense expansion and a broader postwar plan.
