Serious injuries after truck rear-ends auto on Wilkinson Blvd

A tractor trailer struck a sedan carrying Lee Owensby’s family near Belmont on Wilkinson Boulevard. Carolyn Robinson, 22, suffered severe head and nose injuries, with several relatives also hurt though less seriously. Driver Donat Dion, 24, Charlotte, was cited for speeding for conditions. The crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. as the 1951 sedan waited to turn.

Drag Racers Yield Place Behind Wheel

Two youths, Fred Floyd Rush and Gus Junior Garrison, were convicted in Gastonia city court of drag racing on Franklin Ave. Judge O. F. Mason ordered three months suspension of their driver’s licenses as a condition of leniency. Hubert Crisp received a 30 day stay and a $25 fine plus costs for driving without financial responsibility insurance. Robert MedAfee was given a 30 day suspension for violation of the prohibition law.

New Delicacies At Public Market Fair In Los Angeles

At a downtown hotel wholesale market fair a display features exotic foods from around the world. Quail eggs shark fins reindeer steak cater pillars lily bulbs grasshoppers in butter are shown alongside hams soaked in whisky candies caviar cheeses pink beer and other unusual items. Man charged in two deaths in Gastonia

John Clifton Nolen aged 35 was charged Monday morning with manslaughter in the Friday night highway deaths of two Gas ton ia men on US 321 south of Gastonia. State Patrolman Paul Hemphill said Nolen’s car was involved and he was in the vehicle at the time. Nolen, a telephone company worker, was injured and taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital. The warrant was turned over to Hemphill for execution.

Shark Attack Kills Skindiver at La Jolla Beach

Robert Pamperin, 33, of San Diego, was killed by a shark while skindiving 50 yards offshore at La Jolla. Onlookers, lifeguards, and a Coast Guard helicopter searched the waters, but Pamperin was not recovered. A large white shark was reported beneath the surface. this marks the third shark fatality in the region in recent years.

Chamber Man At Institute

Fred Ratchford executive secretary of the Gastonia Chamber of Commerce left to attend the Southeastern Institute for Chamber of Commerce Executives in Chapel Hill. The institute lasts one week. Ratchford joined the chamber last Monday replacing Doug Guthrie who moved to a Chamber job in Goldsboro. Ratchford formerly was personnel manager at the RCGL Plant of Burlington Industries.

Steeplejack Held On Liquor Charge in Dallas Prison Camp

A year-old Lowell steeplejack, Arthur M. Elkin known as Bud, was arrested Saturday and charged with attempting to smuggle a pint of liquor into a Dallas prison camp. Rural Police say the act was witnessed by the wife of a prisons department officer as inmates played baseball near the fence.
