Two Gastonia Scouts were recommended for the Eagle Scout badge at a Monday Court of Honor held in the courthouse. A community scouting roundup names merit badge recipients by town and merit. Recipients include Ronnie Lee Brooks in Fastonia for Art and Jimmy Summite in Cherryville for Bird Study along with numerous others from Belmont Gastonia McAdenville Cherryville Mt. Holly Cramerton Harden Belmont and Bellomont.
Joseph Plate Edwards, 23, was brought to Gastonia city court from Lowell by officer Johnny Wallace on a superior court capias. He received a 12 month suspended sentence for larceny of about 20 dollars in March of Dimes money from the Dunn Mill on January 37. A related suspect also got an identical sentence. Edwards had warrants for failure to pay about 35 dollars in costs on an old high court conviction.
The Gaston County Merchants Association directors plan the last summer meeting tonight at the river home of Craig Watson on the Catawba river with a steak dinner. President Forest Roberts will preside at the 8 30 gathering and office staff will attend as guests.
Several defendants appeared in Gastonia municipal court on Tuesday morning charged with running a red light or stop sign or convicted of such violations and paying court costs. Eddie Lewis, 52, James Canipe, 21, Joseph S. Jacobs Jr. Athenia Drive, Clarence Padgett, Hubert R. Austin, 48, Daniel G. Buckner, 36, and David Bowman, 79, were listed with addresses. Troy Horace Seigler, 46, Auten Road, paid $3 and costs for an expired license. Percy William Jones, 18, Guilford, paid for speeding. Samuel Jones, 57, North Oakland Street, had a prohibition law charge not pressed with leave. a prayer for judgment continued with no costs in a case of allowing dogs to run loose against Joe Stewart. Thompson Biggerstiff was fined $100 and costs for driving under the influence.
William Franklin Hunter Jr., 29, was sentenced by Judge Francis Clarkson in Gaston superior court to 2-5 years for three forgery charges tied to bad checks and forged father’s name. An additional 3-5 year suspended term runs consecutively. Hunter’s brother’s case was dropped as lacking a case. Hunter had prior morals and larceny convictions in Gaston and Japan. In a separate matter, John Beer, 17, Dallas, received 18-24 months on the roads for a June 10 1955 break in at Summer Hardware and theft of pocket knives. A prior crime against nature plea was amended to attempt to commit such a crime and concurrent sentences with a first-offenders camp order.
Betty Jean Massey of Mount Holly and Dan Shannon of Gastonia were chosen at the district elimination contest in Lowell to compete in the state bus driver contest at Chapel Hill. The district 6 Troop D event drew bus drivers from Gaston and Lincoln counties, with judges chosen by state patrolman Don Thompson. Winners receive scholarships and bonds plus trophies from local organizations. Lincoln winners Judith Whitener and Robert Howie also earned savings bonds.
Tom Porter Lively 79 of South Vance Street died Sunday. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a m at Ward Love Funeral Chapel with burial in Hollywood Cemetery. Officiating ministers are Rev C C Washam of Odgll Memorial Methodist Church Bessemer City and Rev S W Johnson of Bethea Methodist Church.
Mrs Oscar Turner 26 learning to drive backed her car across a vacant lot through a brick wall into a swimming pool. Her passenger Mrs Bernice King escaped with minor injuries. Their son Jack 2 was uninjured. Officials say a billion dollar military aid cut would seriously impair essential defense.
Thomas Bryan Spock aged 68 of 24 Melrose Avenue Asheville died Tuesday at 2 a m after two years of declining health. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p m First Baptist Church Asheville with burial in an Asheville cemetery. Survived by wife Hattie Durham Spock son T B Spock Jr of Gastonia and several siblings and relatives.
The executive committee of the Western North Carolina Public Health Association will meet in Gastonia at the local health department at 9 a.m. Friday. Plans for the association’s annual meeting on October 4 will be discussed. Miss Louis Breese, health educator at the local health department, serves as secretary treasurer.
Mrs Edna Petty director of nurses at Gaston Memorial Hospital will attend the District 5 North Carolina State Nurses Association meeting at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte on Wednesday night. She is a former district president serving two years and now serves on the executive committee.

Twenty five members of the Gaston Civil Rescue Association began Monday afternoon to distribute civil defense instruction posters to all homes and businesses in Gastonia. The posters, printed on heavy cardboard, are designed for a permanent display and bear safety measures for air raid drills. Ronald M. Heafner, Gastonia civil defense director, said the four day task of distribution is underway.
Robert H Pinnix Construction Company of Gastonia lands a 1 100 000 project for Biltmore Dairies on Hendersonville highway near Asheville. The dairy plant will be one of the state s largest with 99 000 square feet over two floors and a basement. Completion is set for March 15 1957 under Captain Carl Stewart s supervision.
Co. F, 120th Infantry from Gastonia joins more than 8,000 North Carolina National Guardsmen of the 30th Infantry Division for a two week active duty field training at Fort Bragg. Capt. William F. Herris notes a heavy schedule starting Monday morning. The unit mess, led by William H. Davis, serves officers and men, calling it the best mess on the post. First Sergeant John D. Humphries hails the dining facility. This marks the second encampment for Old Hickory since a regional reorganization in October 1954.
