Budget Enacted and Major Tax Plan Moves Ahead

In Raleigh the General Assembly enacted a $3.58 billion budget for the next two fiscal years and considered a sweeping tax package. The House approved the spending bill and sent it to the Senate, which passed it despite a defeated 42-7 vote on an added $26 million for teachers. The plan includes a 19 percent raise for teachers over the biennium and about 10 percent for state workers in year one, with 2 percent in year two. The House finance subcommittee trimmed revenues by $18 million, dropping proposed insurance tax boosts, cigar taxes, liquor tax changes, and other levies.

Girl From Ohio First Army Nurse To Die In War

A 22 year old nurse from Canton Ohio Lt Lane, serving with the 12th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam, was killed by an enemy rocket in a Vietnamese ward. Capt Lorraine Renee and Lt Patricia Carr recall her compassion for Vietnamese patients and colleagues. A Vietnamese child also died and two Americans were wounded in the blast. Dr Shain Meyer notes Lane’s empathy for those harmed in the conflict.

Pope Paul Appeals for Universal Justice in Geneva

Patman urges Nixon to withdraw deposits from banks raising rates

Washington AP Patman chairman of the Ways and Means Committee urges President Nixon to withdraw government deposits from banks that raised the prime rate to 10 percent. Fire killers blamed in family home tragedy
