Norfolk, Va June 9 A navy Grumman torpedo bomber with a crew of three was down in the Atlantic about 70 miles east of Cape Henry. A massive search by six ships and 75 planes, plus Coast Guard planes, continued as the wreckage area was scoured and the submerged submarine U S S Tigrone was alerted.
Executives from six electric utilities in the Carolinas heard speakers discuss electrification as a path to industrial progress. John F. Watlington Jr. of Wachovia Bank praised industrial leadership and urged a balanced regional pattern between farming and industry. John M. Archer of Nantahala Power & Light spoke on encouraging more industrial development and diversification. Homer Pace of South Carolina Electric & Gas outlined cooperation across the electrical industry to improve the regional economy.
In Charleston West Virginia a fifteen year old boy named Jimmy Bash was found not guilty after a three hour jury verdict. He admitted to shooting his father Charles Ted Basham in April while he slept during a drinking bout, saying he acted because his father had threatened to kill him and had beaten him and his mother.

PRAGUE June 9 Czechoslovakia sentenced four people to death and four to prison terms on charges of spying for western powers. The eight-day treason trial ended with 13 defendants found guilty. One death convict was Mrs Milada Horakova former National Socialist deputy. The court said all defendants had contact with foreign powers and passed state secrets.
Washington reports the Agriculture Department holds about 125 million dollars worth of butter cheese and dried milk stored under farm price support. It owns 137 million pounds of butter 250 million pounds of dried milk and 43.5 million pounds of cheese. The department plans further purchases this year but cannot sell at required prices. Free relief offers abroad and at home draw few takers due to shipping costs and limited needs.
J Edgar Hoover testified before a Senate committee that U S Communists are going underground with subversive activity higher now than at any time since World War II. He said 48 percent of party membership is in basic industries and warned of potential sabotage in key defense sectors. Communist efforts toward infiltration are centered in New York New Jersey Ohio Pennsylvania California and Michigan and target steel heavy machinery mining communications transportation electrical and maritime industries.
World War I chaplain and former Rhodes scholar Dr. Benjamin Rice Lacy Jr. was chosen unanimously as moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the United States at the 90th Southern General Assembly in Massanetta Springs Va. The gathering drew about 400 lay and clergy from 81 presbyteries with more than 200 others in attendance. Dr. Lacy, born in Raleigh in 1888, educated at Davidson College and Oxford, later served as a Union Seminary pastor and WWI chaplain.
General Omar N. Bradley testified before the Senate committee that American armed forces would not suffice in a major war by mid 1951 yet expect to reach necessary strength to deter and blunt an attack. He urged reliance on mobilization base and industrial power to win if war occurs, while Secretary Johnson argued the budget remains intact and defenses are ahead of peacetime. He warned Russia could strike in both Europe and the Far East.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke at Columbia University where his remarks were read as a potential Republican campaign blueprint. Senator Morse and Senator Brewster praised his warnings on military outlays, subsidies, and the budget, noting echoes of GOP concerns about economy and national integrity.

He also hinted at Allied unity to resist aggression.
In New Guinea a widow faces harsh customs including her husband’s death leading to strangulation. Australia plans to permit beneficial traditions but rejects practices like wife strangulation as unacceptable. Stephen Lonergan told the U N trusteeship council that the administration will not preserve such cruel customs.
Governor Scott has a favorable report on a preliminary survey of a proposed high speed toll road across North Carolina. A feasibility study by two engineering firms will include an aerial route survey, with a September presentation planned to a turnpike committee for 1951 legislation.
Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy harshly denounced Secretary of State Dean Acheson accusing him of aiding Red China and Red Poland. He urged Acheson be fired and criticized postwar policy as war mongering while claiming Communist influence persists. He criticized a 6000000 loan to Poland and cited links to Acheson’s former law firm as Poland’s U.S. business handler. Francia Marion McCall, 70, died from injuries after a Wednesday auto collision near Walkertown in Winston-Salem.
