At New York the stock market fell sharply after news President Eisenhower was taken to Walter Reed Hospital. The daily round included widespread selling, with quotes showing declines across multiple sectors and notable activity in commodities such as butter eggs and hog markets.
Gaston County Health Department confirms the year’s first polio case. Marshall Huffstetler, 14, of 1021 West Fifth Avenue, was admitted to Gaston Memorial Hospital with mild paralysis in his left leg. He likely contracted the virus during a picnic in a neighboring town. He is progressing well.
Esso Standard Oil Co. marketing affiliate of Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey) raised wholesale gasoline prices to dealers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana. The increase averages 2-10 of a cent per gallon in North Carolina and 1-10 of a cent in South Carolina and Louisiana.
County commissioners plan a gradual move to the new Gaston County Agriculture Center in Dallas- Cherryville area, possibly delaying until July 1 or as late as June 13. Some offices have begun packing while others delay. the center will house the county forester, Soil Conservation Service, and Home Demonstration Office among others, replacing scattered offices including four in the post office basement. The building is nearly complete with tile awaiting arrival.
A representative of C F Church Manufacturing Co will demo installing plastic wall tile at D W Dawn & Co 1330 West Franklin Avenue Monday night at 8 pm. All interested invited to learn DIY tile application. A movie will be shown. Admission is free and refreshments served.
A vacation Bible school will begin Monday, June 1 at Adams Memorial Presbyterian Church continuing through June 16. The Rev. H. M. Wilson, pastor, extends an invitation to all age groups to attend. The closing program and awarding of certificates will be held on Sunday, June 17 at 7 30 p m.
Gary L Levinson received the doctor of optometry degree Friday from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis Tennessee. A 1951 Gastonia High School graduate he entered the college in 1953 after completing pre optometric studies at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He joined several professional and social groups at the college and is listed with his parents Mr and Mrs Morris Levinson of 310 West Sixth Avenue.
Gastonia and spouses returned from the 34th NC Lions clubs state convention at Carolina Beach. Local members include Dean Wood and wife Roy Warren and wife Garrett Woodward and wife Dave Rudisill and wife M R Thomas and wife R O Crawford and wife. The club won best activities in blind work for clubs with 80 to 99 members. Roy Warren received the 100 percent secretary award. Convention ended Tuesday night with the Governor's Ball. Gen Ulysses S Grant sought a third term, elected 1868 and 1872, did a two year world tour after second term. In 1880 he pursued renomination but lost to James A Garfield.

Ridley J. Smith of Atlanta Georgia will serve as supply pastor at Linwood Presbyterian Church this summer and return to Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur Georgia in the fall to join the senior class. He previously served at Forsyth and Sandersville Presbyterian churches and will reside at the Linwood manse with his wife Ann Cannon and their three children. He succeeds Rev. Robert J. Wilkins of Gastonia who resigned to take a pastorate in the Wilmington Presbytery.
The Rev. and Mrs. Charles Hardin of Kannapolis will attend morning and evening services Sunday at West Second Avenue Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Rev. Mr. Hardin will speak at both services and Mrs. Hardin will sing. The Rev. J. H. Puckett is the church pastor.
