George Kern Baxter 59 of Hickory hut. 11 formerly Cherryville, a Navy veteran of World War II and a truck driver for 22 years. Survived by widow Pearl Lail Baxter, mother Salle Boyles Baxter, son Sherrill Baxter, four brothers, two grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bess Chapel UMC Lincoln County. Burial in church cemetery. Family to receive friends tonight 7 9 at Carpenter's Funeral Home Cherryville.

In Hernehsville North Carolina a chemical spill from Destructo Chemwny Corp released about 30000 gallons of chemicals into a creek feeding a reservoir. Hundreds of dead fish appeared on Monday prompting Mayor Roger Swisher to consider curbing local water use while tests from the University of Georgia and state wildlife officials investigate the cause.

Woman dies after CB radio lightning strike in Smyrna
Debora Howard Brown, 24, was found dead in Smyrna, Georgia, holding a melted citizens band radio microphone. Police said an exterior antenna was struck by lightning while she appeared to be talking on the radio, leaving burns on her hip, arm, torso, and neck.

The decomposed body of Linwood Les Johnson, 91, with at least two bullet wounds, was found about one mile from where Four Oaks officer Dennis Wilbert Allen was killed. Johnson’s 1964 Chevrolet was found burned, and Allen had radioed about stopping a suspect whose plate differed by one digit. Relatives identified Johnson. autopsy pending.
