Alabama girl top speller wins 47th National Bee
Ann Junkin, 12, of Garda Alabama, representing the Birmingham Post Herald, won the 47th National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling hydrophyte. She defeated Gail Meter, 14, of Bartlett Tennessee, who represented the Memphis Press-Sentinel and misspelled mantellatta before Junkin spelled mantellella and claimed the title.
