District bus drivers will demonstrate driving skill Saturday morning at Homelita in the roadeo. Many prizes await winners as competitors tackle challenging maneuvers and timing tasks in public school transportation event.
Margaret Ferguson of Gaston County earns Most Outstanding and Promising Young Business Student honors at the district roadeo. She will compete in Chapel Hill for a $500 scholarship as her district wins advance. The event runs June 12 13 with 10 a. m. start.
At the Dallas booster banquet the John Philip Sousa Band Award was given to a top band student from Dallas High School. Runner up was John Lester Cloninger who received the directors’ award and a cash prize. Charles Evin Pasour, son of Mr and Mrs Percy M Pasour, was noted, with Band Booster president Howard A Schrum announcing next year’s officers. DHS band director Ernest Travis outlined new appointments, and Mayes earned a four year American Legion scholarship to The Citadel. The meeting, held in the fellowship hall of the Lutheran church, elected new officers and set next steps for the band program.
Miles C. Thornburg returned from Clinton South Carolina where he attended Thornwell High School graduation exercises. Valedictorian Whitefield Watson Mayes, nephew of Mrs. Thornburg and Mrs. Clinton P. Rankin, led the class.
Belmont observes Memorial Day with a service at the Green-Wood cemetery honoring fallen soldiers. Representatives from Belmont National Guard the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars joined local schools and churches in laying wreaths and placing markers at graves.
