Labor Union Leader Woll Dies in New York Hospital
Matthew Woll, 76, AFL-CIO vice president and longtime labor leader, died in New York Hospital. He led the old AFL for 36 years and later served as AFL-CIO officer after the merger. Born in Luxembourg, he rose from apprentice to president of the International Photo-Engravers Union in 1904. He chaired Union Labor Life Insurance for 30 years before becoming its general executive chairman.
