New Township Delayed Again in Gaston County Meeting

For the second straight month Gaston county commissioners postponed a vote on creating a seventh township named Woodlawn with Lowell as the seat. The delay cited the absence of Commissioner Grier Beam and growing opposition. Proponents drew support from Lowell area while opponents cited no clear need for another township carved from Gastonia and South Point townships.

Case dropped in mute case in Gastonia City Court

Solicitor Henry Whitesides moved for dismissal during the trial of George Glenn 45 of 423 North Pryor Street charged with assault with a rifle on Jeanell Crawford. Judge Oscar Mason granted the dismissal while Glenn was later found guilty of violating the ABC law and fined ten dollars plus costs.

Officers Seated By Eagles Club In Gastonia

Harvey Owens was installed Monday night as president of the Gastonia Eagles Club succeeding retiring president Art Freiberger. Young Bridegroom Shot After Elopement in Fort Smith

In Fort Smith Arkansas a 17 year old groom was found shot to death at his home hours after eloping and marrying 16 year old Peggy Stroud. Police say John Louis Maddox and Peggy Stroud wed Saturday and returned to announce it. The couple’s parents were awakened by a loud noise about 1 am Sunday. Maddox lay on the bedroom floor wounded in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun nearby.

Artist Injured In Freak Wreck On River Bridge

John Daniel Haynes 23 of Gastonia a WSOC TV commercial artist was injured in a freak accident on the Catawba River bridge while en route to work. He said water splashed over his windshield blinding him as he attempted to pass another car causing his 1933 model car to strike railing and incur about 500 dollars in damage. Haynes was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital for x rays with bruises and neck and back pain.

Peeler Taken By Death At 63 In Florence

Florence Royal Peeler 63 of 215 South York road died at 12 15 am Tuesday in a local hospital. A World War I veteran he is survived by wife Alma Witt Peeler four sons David Gastonia Danny in the army Fort Meade Md Donald in the navy Okinawa and Robert at home a sister Mrs Annetle Foster Covington Va The body is at Carothers Funeral Home with funeral arrangements incomplete.

Tanker Fire Near Philadelphia Ends in Tragedy

A tanker on Route 122 near Red Church, south of Schuylkill Haven, caught fire at about 8:15 a.m. EDT. Sgt. Clouser reported the tanker exploded, eight or nine bystanders and a trooper ducked for cover, with no collision identified and no clear cause yet. Victims were not immediately identified.
