The government warns that increasing alcohol intake during pregnancy raises the risk of deformed or retarded infants. A government agency cites studies linking fetal damage to maternal drinking, urging expectant mothers to discuss habits with doctors.
Lt Gov Jimmy Green, interim chairman of the state Board of Education, asks not to be nominated for a two year term as chairman amid a divided board over the election. He backs ex officio status for the lieutenant governor but Gov Hunt opposes, favoring a board appointee as chair.
Thirty two members and three teachers from Gastonia High School class of 1927 celebrated their 50th graduation anniversary at Gaston Country Club. Stories of the 1920s sparked nostalgia as attendees recalled prohibition, Babe Ruth, Dempsey and Lindbergh.
The Postal Service plans to choose Gastonia’s new postmaster within 30 days with salaries ranging from 19 154 to 27 187 a year. Finalists are unnamed, and exact pay will be announced only after appointment. Stanley also awaits a postmaster vacancy with salaries listed.
A thunderstorm from the north dumped heavy rain and lightning on Gastonia Tuesday night, starting around 11 p.m. A fuse blew at Ivay's Department Store in Lastringe Mall, causing brief outages in the 400 block of Stevens Street and the 1400 block of Greeny Circle. Power was restored quickly as utilities reported few outages overall and warned of more thundershowers through early tonight with a 30 percent rain chance and 19 percent for tonight into tomorrow. Tomorrow should be partly cloudy with lows near 60 and highs around 80.
