Twenty two men including nine Marines and thirteen Navy personnel died when a 50 foot launch swamped in rough seas off Norfolk while returning a liberty party to the carrier Kearsarge. Swims 2 Miles To Safety After Navy Launch Sinks
Thomas H. Rowe a 22 year old boatswain's mate third class swam about two miles to pier 5 at the Norfolk Naval Station after the launch he rode with sank tossing some 90 men overboard in Hampton Roads. Interviewed aboard the hospital ship Consolation he said life jackets were unused and he found a light on a ship and pulled himself ashore after an estimated two to three hours in rough cold water. He noted the launch crew and others struggled to hold onto one another as darkness fog rain and rough seas prevailed. Rowe who has served five years in the Navy and has been at Saipan Okinawa and the Philippines described his experience and recovery at the naval hospital.
