Two-Star General Among 9 Officers Dead In Crash
A major general and eight other Air Force officers died when a tanker plane crashed at Minot Air Force Base. One survivor was hospitalized in critical condition. The aircraft, on a training mission, broke up after impact in fog and fire. Investigators sought the cause. Major General Charles M. Eisenhart, 33, vice commander of the 15th Air Force, and several colonels and lieutenant colonels were among the dead. The base reported limited visibility, with no eyewitnesses. Eisenhart had served 30 years and earned the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, and Bronze Star. He had flown over 6,000 hours including combat missions.

AP report from Kannapolis says an elderly couple married a month ago were found dead in their rural home on Rt. J China Grove.Authorities believe the husband, 73 year old Joe B Thompson, killed his wife and then himself with a shotgun after strangulation of the wife, Mrs. Essia Wellman Anderson Thompson, whose body was found in the kitchen. Thompson's body lay nearby with a yardstick and firearm found at the scene. Coroner Len Hannienit noted the husband was shot in the chest.

American Shot Down By Cubans
The AP reports an American citizen, Everall Jackson, 27, of Los Angeles, was shot down over Cuban airspace on December 28 at 8:30 p.m. while trying to infiltrate with a private broadcast plane.
