Superior Court recessed late Thursday afternoon until Monday morning at 9 a.m. Presiding Judge Harry C. Martin of Asheville closed the court to attend a Judicial Conference in Chapel Hill. Chief Solicitor Hamp Childs said jurors should report Monday. the murder trial of Paul Nicholson is on the docket, while Burl McSwain’s murder case remains open. Nicholson, 40, is accused of the 1969 slaying of James P. Nicholson Jr. He was at Dorothea Dix Hospital since July 23, 1969, deemed mentally competent and recently returned to Baston County. McSwain’s case, also involving a 1966 shooting, was not called.

Lights stay with tower but unlit
The WBTV television tower on Spencer Mountain will keep its 1490 colored lights lit year round, a station spokesman said. The tower, decorated as a Christmas tree, has delighted Gastonia residents and motorists for years. Original plans called for removing the lights after the holidays each year, but the displays are simply cut off after the season and left in place until next Christmas period.
